Toothsayer - EP

Over the course of her lengthy career, Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq has proven she’s a once-in-a-generation Canadian artist and a tireless champion of Indigenous culture and voices. Following her 2016 album Retribution and her 2018 debut novel Split Tooth (which was longlisted for the Giller Prize), Toothsayer was recorded as a companion piece to Britain’s National Maritime Museum’s Polar Worlds exhibit, and finds her collaborating with drummer Jean Martin and British-Iranian experimental producer Ash Koosha. The EP’s five songs largely explore the devastating impact of climate change on the Arctic. Opening track “Icebreaker” begins with an ominous drone and slow drums before Tagaq’s voice comes in, alternating between gasps and guttural growls. “Submerged” crackles with electric intensity, while quieter songs like the piano-driven “Snowblind” and “Hypothermia” highlight her voice’s malleability in evoking the unforgiving landscapes that are in danger of disappearing—an all-too-timely call to arms.
