Since the release of Ace of Spades, his 2020 joint album with fellow producer De Mthuda, Ntokzin has shown a knack for isgubhu. His take on ’piano is heavily influenced by kwaito with sprinkles of deep house and jazz. On Makubenjalo, he invites an array of vocalists—MalumNator, Mashudu, Gugu and more—to marry their soulful vocals with his bass-heavy beats. The result is a selection of songs that, for the most part, explore the emotions of romantic relationships (“eDuze”, “Onjani”, “Ngelosi”) and the intersection of life and spirituality (“Entshonalanga”).
