Prayer Warriors - EP

Prayer Warriors - EP

The eponymous seven track album by the duo of producer DrumPope and songwriter Ntsika (of The Soil) is an epistle on modern day spirituality. The album opener “Masithandazeni”, with its haunting synths and rattling drumlines serves as a prayer of sorts, with Ntsika shepherding the listeners into a four-to-the floor prayer. It’s a theme that bleeds into Yehla Moya, where the duo summons the unseen into the physical realm with the lyrics “Mawehle uMoya Oyingcwele”. Here, and throughout Prayer Warriors, the duo broadly pitches spirituality as the benzine in humanity’s tank. The propulsive percussion on “Camagu” offers a dark and broody atmosphere for Ntsika to proselytsze on the redemptive force of ancestral acknowledgement. While Ntsika drops clan praises, his scriptures are always backed by blaring basslines and chest-thumping drumwork. “Baba Credo Mutwa’s Chant” is an ode to the late mythologist and traditional healer Credo Mutwa. “Sithandazela imvula” chants Ntsika in another example of the duo summoning the unseen into existence. In the spiritual universe of Prayer Warriors, dance and music act as a bridge between the material and invisible world. “Amen”, the album closer, crescents with a prayer thanking the heavens for their love. “Ubukhulu bakho siyabubona” croons Ntsika, bookending a project that is equal parts reverence and rave.
