Kagiso-born multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Yumbs’s first offering is a showcase of his wide range of skills. His electric guitar curls around the log drum before vocalist Babalwa M doodles to introduce a project that follows the blueprint of “private school ‘piano” laid by Kelvin Momo: mellow and lengthy in-depth songs that emphasise each element by allocating it ample time to shine. Momo and his longtime collaborator Babalwa M appear on the airy “Mali Ye Phepha”, while the duo Mellow & Sleazy bring their bacardi timbre to “Malunde”, a catchy party anthem featuring vocalist Aymos. While The First Offering has touches of electronic jazz and deep house, as keys and pads dominate the music, the essence of amapiano is maintained throughout as the log drum and basslines come with the strong knock and sure-footedness that characterises the genre.
