Dim Mak Records New Noise, Vol. 3

With its third installment of new releases, Dim Mak Records showcases an impressive roster of stellar artists while affirming its in-house talent in signing them. The Flemish duo Sound of Stereo (from Brabant, Belgium) gets the party started with “Anybody There,” a dance floor–friendly helping of EDM that balances electro with fidget and trace elements of techno. The Cannock, England–based Will Bailey follows with “Mayday,” a show-stopping cut rooted in moombahton (the offspring of house and reggaeton). But Bailey’s take on the subgenre is boomier in bass and richer in crosshatched textures than the music produced by the style's father, Dave Nada. Birmingham’s Alex Schmitz creates a type of techno that’s dotted with wonky sounds and multiple gradations of fidelity; at times it recalls a young DJ Doc Martin’s sets in abandoned Los Angeles warehouses during the early '90s. Under the H8ers moniker, producers Janpier Beauchamp & Dano create thinking fan’s techno with layers upon layers of sound collages that bump against one another; the confectionary results are both sweet and sticky to the ears.
