The Marvelettes Essentials

Though they never evinced the star power of Motown's other big female group The Supremes, The Marvelettes gave the label its first No. 1 hit with 1961's “Please Mr. Postman,” a song covered by many artists including The Beatles. That debut single launched a run of hits that lasted most of the decade. Though known mainly for dance numbers, the group could also nail a sultry ballad like 1966's “Don't Mess With Bill.” By this point, Motown was putting more effort into The Supremes, and after several lineup changes and a few lesser hits, The Marvelettes disbanded in 1972.
