Soul of a Nation by Quincy Jones

“You've got to know where you come from in order to get where you want to go.” That's legendary producer and multi-instrumentalist Quincy Jones telling Apple Music about this playlist, which he curated in honor of the exhibition “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983,” on view at The Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles from March 23 to September 1, 2019. “Without that knowledge,” says Jones, “we are in danger of repeating history: and I don't mean the good parts.” Songs like James Brown's “Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud” and Gil Scott-Heron's “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” were a driving component of the Black liberation movement of the '60s and '70s; this collection—intended to accompany a walk through the exhibit—highlights the music that gave voice to the passion, anger, and hope behind the push for a new America. Adds Quincy, “I hope you enjoy these incredibly rich and beautiful creations by some of the artists who paved the way.”
