About Lucky Chops

Busking superstars, the New York instrumental outfit Lucky Chops are a dynamic, horn-based ensemble known for their infectious live performances and funky, electronic dance music-influenced cover songs. The group broke out in 2014 after a video of their subway performance mash-up of Lipps, Inc.'s "Funkytown" and James Brown's "I Feel Good" went viral. Following several EPs, they released their 2019 full-length debut, Lucky Chops. Although Lucky Chops' membership has shifted over the years, the band solidified in 2016 around trombonist Josh Holcomb, tenor saxophonist Daro Behroozi, trumpeter Joshua Gawel, drummer Charles Sams IV, and sousaphonist Raphael Buyo. The group originally formed while Holcomb, Behroozi, and Gawel were students at Manhattan's famed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Another early member was Manhattan School of Music graduate/ baritone saxophonist Leo Pellegrino (aka Leo P). Initially, the band made their name busking in the subway and posting videos online. After going viral, they were able to start booking tours and recording. They debuted in 2016 with the full-length effort NYC. Around the same time, Pellegrino left the band to focus on his similarly inclined "brasshouse" trio Too Many Zooz. They returned a year later with the Walter EP. Following tours of India and Europe, the group released their 2019 full-length debut, Lucky Chops. ~ Matt Collar
