Young, Brown and Dangerous

Young, Brown and Dangerous

A Latino gangster rapper from Los Angeles, Mr. Criminal has been around since the turn of the millennium, releasing albums like Criminal Mentality, Stay on the Streets, Only the Strong Survive, and Death Before Dishonor. Young, Brown and Dangerous is his ninth album; it continues in his usual style, rhyming almost exclusively about being a G, repping for the Westside, taking out the haters, and Brown pride. (Yet he also gets surprisingly personal on "Close Your Eyes.") While the lyrics might be a bit redundant, his smooth but spirited flow still sounds good, and the lowrider-ready production is still an intoxicating blend of glutinous bass lines, squiggly synth action, and hard-knocking drums. There are a few guest spots in the mix (from G-Malone, Mr. Capone-E, Baby Bash, Lucky Luciano, Crazy Boy, and Dominator), but for the most part it's all Criminal, and it's all good. For proof that G-Funk-style joints can still sound dope in 2012, check out "It's All That I Know," "Cali Girls," and "Dedicated to My Riders."
