What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid

The Scottish folksinger Donovan Leitch has recorded a large catalog of greatly varied material ranging from acoustic folk to experimental psychedelic pop featuring top-notch studio session players. This 1965 debut features him at his most primitive. Acoustic guitar and harmonica around his neck, he connected with the gorgeous and timeless single “Catch the Wind.” “Car Car (Riding In My Car)” is the required Woody Guthrie cover. “You’re Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond” is the traditional blues number. Donovan’s originals are the highlight of the set, however. “To Sing for You” is a simple song of purpose. But “Josie” is a beautiful love song that suggests where the decade is headed for some. The bonus edition of this debut is supplemented with a number of notable tracks, including the excellent b-side “Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do,” an edited version of “Catch the Wind” with strings and an early version of the classic “Colours.” He was just getting started.
