What I Didn’t Tell You (Deluxe)

Coco Jones has always been a star. Since she was a teenager, she’s been in the spotlight—most notably starring in the 2012 Disney Channel musical Let It Shine. After the film’s success, Jones was on the fast track to superstardom, but unlike some of her child-star counterparts, that didn’t come as easily. She’s continued acting while releasing singles and EPs with little to no fanfare. However, in 2020, everything changed for the singer-songwriter when she joined TikTok and went viral for singing covers and original verses on classic songs that got people buzzing about her again. Backed by a blend of sounds influenced by the ’90s and early 2000s on this 11-track EP, Jones is vulnerable as she narrates different vignettes of love, love lost, and everything in between. On the swaggering opener, “Crazy for Me,” she brags about her influence as she describes the lengths a man is willing to go to get and keep her attention. The follow-up, “Caliber,” continues her cool-girl persona as she instructs her romantic interests on how to shoot their shot with her. The singer-songwriter samples SWV’s hit song “Rain” as she ruminates on rekindling an old flame. “I was impulsive, try to compare, but you got it/I know where my home and my heart is/Maybe this is a sign/’Cause I’m always so unsure, back and forth/Can’t make up my mind/Caught in between it, maybe, it’s me,” she lilts. She gets vulnerable on the stripped-down ballad “ICU” as she reflects on the hardships of growing apart within a relationship. Throughout What I Didn’t Tell You (Deluxe), Jones doesn’t harp on the bitterness of love as she examines the nature of each of her relationships; she looks at them from many different angles as she conveys the twist of love’s curves while bringing listeners closer to her.
