The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point

The Arizona punk foursome Authority Zero weathered some integral lineup changes before recording its fifth studio album, The Tipping Point. Guitarist Zach Vogel left the band to spend more time with his family in Wisconsin; then drummer Jim Wilcox departed to pursue other projects. But their replacements—guitarist Brandon Landelius and notable punk drummer Sean Sellers (Real McKenzies, Good Riddance)—help give new life and energy to Authority Zero’s sound. “No Other Place” is relentlessly pummeling high-octane old-school punk in the spirit of early Bad Religion (with the ferocious gang vocals of early Misfits recordings). Even with Orange County punk producer Cameron Webb in the mixing chair, The Tipping Point doesn't resemble strip-mall pop-punk. If anything, these songs push the boundaries of melodic punk into newly charted territories. There are moments with the adrenalin-charged tempos of “Undivided” and in the punchy “On the Brink” where frontman Jason DeVore’s singing closely recalls Russ Rankin from Good Riddance (but this might be a byproduct of having Good Riddance’s former drummer powering the band).
