The Secret Weapon

The Secret Weapon

In the late 2010s and early 2020s, Memphis hip-hop was exploding, with BlocBoy JB, NLE Choppa, Duke Deuce, Key Glock, Pooh Shiesty, and BIG30 following in the footsteps of modern precursors like Young Dolph. When he died in December 2022, 1017 Records signee Big Scarr was in the process of joining the tradition. Armed with a thick, growly baritone and icy charisma, Scarr was an understated counter to the hyperenergetic approach of his regional peers, and by the time he came out with Big Grim Reaper: The Return, he'd become a formidable mic presence. The Secret Weapon, released months after Scarr's passing, only reaffirms what fans knew when he died: Rap had lost a powerful new voice. Throughout the LP, Scarr flaunts sharper phrasing, improved enunciation, and a refined level of all-around flow dexterity. For "Toe Tag," he dives into a triple-time flow laced with colorful quips and casually macabre threats. Drugs get popped like Skittles, and opps have their windows blown out in a mid-traffic shootout. Teaming with his cousin Pooh Shiesty, he levels up the quotables even higher, threatening to turn a so-called demon into angel dust. He gets a little more introspective on "Understanding," weaving in and out of a ghostly trap beat with a mix of casual gunplay and palpable disaffection—a balance he might not have been capable of on earlier projects. While Big Scarr left an indelible mark with the time he had, his rap career was ultimately far too brief to know the true depths of his talent. With each release, he mined deeper into the deposits of his ability, and his posthumous album finds him more than capably trading bars with his label boss, Gucci Mane, on "Trappin n Rappin." For his part, Gucci leaves a chilling message at the beginning of the track: "Long live the legend/My secret weapon." If Scarr's talent was a secret, it wasn't going to be for too much longer.
