The One

The One

For over two decades, the self-proclaimed “baddest bitch” has weakened knees with her explicit, Miami Bass-influenced rap style. Her sixth studio album (and first in nine years) The One finds Trina in fighting form, still snapping necks with impunity, but with her priorities straight. “Get Money” shows her steely focus and refusal to allow jealousy to take over (“They gon' have your business in the streets/You gon’ have some enemies even if you broke/Might as well get money"). She looks back with no regrets (“Can I Live”) and honors the most important woman in her life (“Mama”). Maturity! But fans want to hear dirty raps, and she raises the bar on her ode to oral pleasure “On His Face” ("Told him, ‘Slow down, no, it's not a race'/Got one hand on his head, blunt to my face"). Then there’s “BAPS,” with its Cash Money Millionaires sample flip and Nicki Minaj bars. Trina elevates the spice level to volcanic, naming men she claims to have curved (you’re going to have to listen, we’re not going there). Think she’s worried about blowback? Trina’s sexy, salty tongue existed before the age of social media, and she isn’t holding it—not now, not ever.
