Puerto Rico’s Don Omar deserves credit as a harbinger for the eventual música urbana boom. He was one of the first reggaetoneros to see huge commercial success in the continental US, with hits like “Dile” and the ubiquitous global smash “Danza Kuduro” becoming certified floor-moving classics. Following a spate of retirement concerts in 2017, the self-described Last Don returns with a proverbial final word to close out the decade he helped to shape. Provocatively titled, The Last Album consists of 10 tracks that touch on traditions while cementing Omar’s rightful place in the genre’s contemporary conversation. On “Ramayama,” he and Farruko adroitly ride the rootsy reggae wave that the latter did on Gangalee, and he later reunites with his “La Fila” collaborator Sharlene Taule for the similarly breezy “Encanto.” Still, Omar sounds as energized as ever over the dembow riddim he made his name with, as evidenced by tracks like “Perreo Sólido” and the poppy “Pensando En Ti.”
