The Evening : Live At APPARATUS

The Evening : Live At APPARATUS

Jean and Marcus Baylor—partners in marriage and music, on vocals and drums respectively—take their distinctive mix of R&B, modern jazz, and gospel to the stage of a pop-up jazz club within the hip NYC design studio APPARATUS. Paring down the larger lineup of their 2021 release, Generations, the Baylors deliver with a tight three-horn band, with Terry Brewer on piano and Rhodes, Keith Loftis on tenor and soprano saxes, Darren Barrett on trumpet, Mark Williams on trombone, and Yasushi Nakamura on bass. The many facets of The Baylor Project are on display: standards (the luxurious ballad “Tenderly,” the joyous “Our Love Is Here to Stay”), grooving crowd-pleasers (“We Swing [The Cypher],” “Love Makes Me Sing,” “Happy to Be With You”), instrumental virtuoso showcases (Brewer’s gospel-piano tour de force “Lord Keep Me Day By Day,” Marcus Baylor’s solo meditation “Call of the Drum”), and best of all, the darker neo-soul aesthetic evident on “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “Tell Me a Story,” and “2020.”
