Texas Technician

Texas Technician

If the title isn’t a big enough hint, That Mexican OT’s 2024 project Texas Technician is a devoted ode to the rap sounds of the Lone Star State. The Bay City, Texas-born MC documents the history of hip-hop from his home state, inviting vets and peers alike to tell stories of street deals and triumphs. Though there’s an abundance of TX legends like Z-Ro, Paul Wall (OT sometimes refers to himself as “Pablo Wall”), and Slim Thug, the artist born Virgil René Gazca invites stars from throughout the rap world to offer up verses on Texas Technician, highlighting just how much sway OT has accrued in the world of hip-hop. Album opener “02.02.99,” named after OT’s birthday, is a rapid-fire flex that quickly confirms why the rapper is known as one of the best spitters in the game. “Told my chopper that the only thing we got is just each other/I'm the type that need the walls up when they bowling ”cause I'm gutter,” he raps. Elsewhere, on “Cowboy in a Escalade,” OT recruits a fellow celebrated Texas MC, Dallas stalwart Trapboy Freddy. Gazca lays out his entire philosophy in two bars, rapping, “I was 15 years old, pushin' weed on a 10-speed/I'm a lil'-ass Mexican with a big dog in me.”
