So Icy Gang: The ReUp

So Icy Gang: The ReUp

Following his release from prison in 2016, a remade Gucci Mane began to build his 1017 empire anew. Prior to his time inside, the Atlanta trap icon became notorious for alienating his former associates, drawing attention from his careerlong track record of supporting young rappers and producers. Many of these figures went on to become some of the major players in hip-hop music of the past 15 years, including Young Thug, Metro Boomin, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Migos. In 2020, Gucci’s historic 1017 imprint signed new talent and released the label compilation album So Icy Gang, Vol. 1. A series of So Icy-related tapes followed in 2021 and 2022, designed to highlight their abilities. Released just under two years after So Icy Gang, Vol. 1, the near-two-hour posse tape So Icy Gang: The ReUp expands the previous project by 13 tracks. The original Vol. 1 release was the second compilation—following July 2020’s So Icy Summer—to highlight the Gucci acolytes billed as "The New 1017." With some officially signed and others just prospective talent, its ranks included Foogiano, Pooh Shiesty, Big Scarr, and (perhaps most notably) Detroit eccentric Veeze. Whereas So Icy Summer placed fresh voices like these alongside a boatload of star talent—with hefty contributions from Young Thug, Lil Baby, and other stars—Vol. 1 reduces the interference, with no superstar features. The ReUp, however, pulls in some bigger outside names. The project features the hundreds-of-millions-streaming single "Rumors," originally released in early 2022, with a guest spot from Lil Durk (the most high-profile star of the moment seen here). Quavo and Gucci’s Memphis associates Young Dolph and Key Glock also make passing appearance. The project also includes fresh, single-worthy tracks like Gucci’s earnest tribute to his other half, "Mrs. Davis," with its attention-grabbing choral sample. Moments like these make The Re-Up a definitively worthwhile and crucial statement separate from So Icy Vol. 1.
