Lil Zubin’s been called The Weeknd of emo-rap, a claim that checks out once you’ve heard a few bars of his pained falsetto. But the comparison doesn’t quite capture what makes the Philly-born vocalist so interesting: Zubin sings like a fallen angel over murky productions that draw from grungy alt-rock, underground trap, and experimental R&B. His Heavy Down Pour EP feels like sinking slowly into quicksand, with lyrics mired in heartbreak and melancholy. It also features an impressive array of terminally bummed-out guests, from ex-Crystal Castles siren Alice Glass (“Dark Alley”) to internet-rap OG Clams Casino, who shapes the EP’s title track around an appropriately depressing Grouper sample.
