The title of the second EP from Toronto indie-rocker-turned-producer Chris LaRocca is a Portuguese word with no direct English analog; it’s loosely defined as nostalgia for a time that never actually happened. So it’s fitting that Saudade’s fusion of throwback neo-soul vibes and modern, finger-snapped R&B feels warmly familiar yet oddly anachronistic compared to the moody, post-Weeknd minimalism that’s defined the sound of The Six for much of the 2010s. LaRocca’s sweet falsetto can make even the most bitter breakup ballads (the string-heavy “Yardsale”; the wobbly synths of “Made U Cry”) go down like spoonfuls of honey. With the tropical, chipmunk-soul slow jam “Heated Up,” he delivers a ready-made, swoon-inducing soundtrack to your next summertime fling.
