Reprises Vol.2

Safia Nolin is not one to go with the crowd. When the Quebec singer-songwriter was hailed as a breakthrough artist at the 2016 ADISQ Awards, her salty acceptance speech (and laidback attire—a Gerry Boulet T-shirt) caused quite a stir in the national media. Her video for "Lesbian Break-Up Song" (from 2018’s Dans le noir), in which she and other women of all shapes and sizes appear unclothed, also garnered her a bit of controversial attention. On this second covers album, Nolin again follows her unique stylistic vision, taking a diverse selection of well-known French pop and rock tunes and making each her own in a sometimes dark, sometimes diffuse folky way. She tames Gabrielle Destroismaisons’ "Et cetera," imbuing the dance-pop hit with a mix of sensuality and desperation. She brings raw vulnerability to Céline Dion's do-it-my-way hymn "Destin." And she closes with a spare rendition of Indochine's "J'ai demandé à la lune," finding beauty amid the ruins of a relationship, without resorting to melodrama.
