Red List

Red List

After a period of focus on smaller groups, low-reeds specialist Brian Landrus expands to a larger lineup on Red List, which carries the subtitle “Music dedicated to the preservation of our endangered species.” The musical language is markedly contemporary: funk and rock, touches of neo-soul and reggae, with electric guitar (Nir Felder), electro-acoustic keyboards (Geoffrey Keezer) and bass (Lonnie Plaxico), two drummer/percussionists (Rudy Royston and John Hadfield), and several leading horn players: saxophonists Ron Blake and Jaleel Shaw, trombonist Ryan Keberle, and trumpeter Steve Roach. Landrus moves fluidly between baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, and bass and alto flutes, giving a depth and gravity not only to the written parts, but also his compelling solos on each instrument (his bass flute on “The Distant Deeps,” with Corey King’s guest vocal, is a standout).
