Reckless

Reckless

After brief flirtations with pop and ndombolo, soul singer Praiz—perhaps best known for his masterful performance on “That Stupid Song,” his 2011 duet with Bez—returns to familiar ground, delivering his trademark warm, emotive, and soul-stirring vocals on Reckless, his third studio album. Here, the preacher’s son does it all, concocting slow grooves on “Aya Jo” and “New” but yielding to the temptation of Afrobeats that superstar Yemi Alade snakes in on “Taste.” Elsewhere, vocal powerhouse Waje (“Shine”), Cape Verdean singer Djodje (“Keys to My Heart”), Ugandan sensation Alikiba (“Choose You”), and reclusive rap lord Jesse Jagz (“Intentions”) echo the promise of “recklessly loving you” that Praiz makes in the title track. Yet LADIPOE comes close to stealing the show on “Table for Two,” rapping “You deserve a standing ovation the way you bring me down to my knees” as Praiz convincingly coos sweet nothings on a vintage beat inspired by ’90s love.
