Pleading the Blues (feat. Buddy Guy Orchestra)

Pleading the Blues (feat. Buddy Guy Orchestra)

Originally released on the French label Isabel Records, this album finds Junior Wells teaming with fellow blues icon Buddy Guy for an outstanding eight-song session that sounds as fresh today as it did back in 1979. Recorded one Halloween night in Toulouse, France, and backed by the band of Buddy's brother Philip Guy, this brings to mind their first collaboration project—1968's classic Hoodoo Man Blues. Gritty guitar licks, soulful harp-blowing, and great storytelling are the order of the day here. Two tracks, "Cut Out the Lights" and especially the closer, "I Smell Something," sport a heavier funk sound and obvious James Brown influence. The two masters make it sound so easy; there's not a dull moment here. The title track, "Just for My Baby," and "I'll Take Care of You" are especially great. Whether you're a hardcore blues aficionado or a just a casual fan, this is a fantastic record from start to finish.
