In a Michigan rap landscape that’s threatened to become oversaturated in the last half-decade, Peezy’s an old soul. Formerly of the Team Eastside crew, the Detroit native raps like an old-school gangster, a guy who’s gotten his master’s degree from the school of hard knocks. Since his spell in prison for racketeering charges, he’s mellowed out a touch, and on ONLY BUILT 4 DIAMOND LINKS, he’s looking back on his street days from the vantage point of his penthouse (see “Hustler Vs. Scammer”). Detroit rap’s always had a bit of West Coast G-funk bounce to it, as plenty of these beats do; you can picture Peezy cruising through the D, convertible top down in the middle of winter, ice-cold as ever.
