Nappy Dot Org

Sounding something like a version of Arrested Development for the new millennium, Nappy Roots debuted with a bang in 2002, scoring huge hits with the singles "Awnaw" and "Po' Folks" off their platinum-selling first album, Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz. Unfortunately, their next three releases (Wooden Leather, The Humdinger, and The Pursuit of Nappyness) all came and went with little fanfare. For their next project, they regrouped and enlisted Organized Noize, the legendary production crew responsible for classic material from OutKast and Goodie Mob, among others. The result is some of Nappy Roots' best work in years, with songs that jump from the speakers and beats that fuse Southern soul instrumentation with radio-ready pop anthems. "Good & Evil," "Easy Money," and "Hey Love" sound like a Southern-fried take on Black Eyed Peas. The moody "Pete Rose" touches on modern-day craziness like the Craigslist killer over a track reminiscent of '80s-era Whodini, while "Give Me a Sign" channels early André and Big Boi.
