Myths 004

The Myths series of releases comes from the Marfa Myths festival, an alternative to Austin’s South by Southwest that was founded by the arts nonprofit Ballroom Marfa and the Mexican Summer record label. While SXSW’s focus is capitalizing on hype, in the remote town of Marfa, Texas, the focus is, well, no focus at all. It’s here that Welsh artist Cate Le Bon helped to produce Deerhunter’s 2019 album Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared? and made this fantastically harebrained EP with the band's frontperson Bradford Cox. They excavate the scratchiest corners of post-punk on the picaresque “Canto!” and “Fireman,” and its ashram and krautrock influences on instrumentals “Companions in Misfortune” and “Constance.” It’s comic, too: “What Is She Wearing” sets an existential crisis amidst garbage day and surprise hot weather.
