Myself

Myself

“Allow me to introduce myself,” August Alsina sings on the title track of this 10-song project. Myself comes to fans some 10 years into Alsina’s career, but depending on how closely you’ve followed the New Orleans-hailing singer following his infamous “entanglement” saga with Jada Pinkett Smith, or his announcement, as he introduced a man called Zu during a November 2022 episode of VH1’s The Surreal Life, that love had “showed up” for him “in a new way”—you might still be learning who August Alsina is. Who he is across Myself is an artist wholly at peace with his journey, opening the book on his history in the streets (“Lied to You,” “Never Fold”), his rock-star lifestyle (“Weekdays,” “Party”), his views on the importance of self-love (“Same,” “August”), and also how much he appreciates the people who’ve been there for him from the beginning (“Friends”). The August Alsina of Myself doesn’t sound too dissimilar from the one who delivered highly personal projects like Testimony, This Thing Called Life, and Forever and a Day, but that’s exactly why fans keep coming back in the first place. There’s always so much to catch up on.
