In Your Mind

In Your Mind

As Roxy Music went on hiatus and the sounds of disco filled clubs in New York and Paris, Bryan Ferry released In Your Mind, his first solo album of all original material. The results are grand: songs like “This Is Tomorrow,” “Love Me Madly Again," and “All Night Operator” reignite Roxy's interstellar rock style with the feel for lean R&B that Ferry had honed by making two albums of vintage cover songs. Supermodel Jerry Hall was Ferry’s lover and muse at the time, and many of these songs entail delicious late-night desires. “Party Doll” is an irresistible invitation to all-night pleasure: “Party doll/Oh how you turn me on/Now the day's for sleepin'/For I'll be leapin' all night long…” Ferry may have been ensconced in the glamorous nightlife of the international capitals, but In Your Mind is by no means a soulless party romp. “One Kiss” and “Rock of Ages” are two of his most aching and elegant ballads, while the closing title song provides a moment of slowly levitating grandeur similar to the solo work of Ferry’s old bandmate Brian Eno.
