Henosis

Henosis

Dutch pianist and composer Joep Beving has come far since his intimate 2015 debut, Solipsism, the first volume of his ambitious trilogy that also includes 2017’s Prehension. Henosis marks the journey’s end with a double album that contemplates our infinite cosmos. Beving’s beloved upright Schimmel piano, with its clattering action and elemental, muffled sound, is still at the heart of the music. But there’s a new complexity now, his shimmering, fragile piano joined by atmospheric electronics and strings. “Into the Dark Blue” and “Shepherd,” in particular, show Beving brilliantly balancing his two soundworlds. The final moments of Henosis, however, are given to his piano, its haunting sound distorting and dissolving into the night.
