GONZO is the EP follow-up to Boslen’s 2021 debut album, DUSK to DAWN, but even in this leaner format, the Vancouver rap visionary goes gloriously over the top. Whereas “LEVELS” and “HEIST” see him reconnecting with the self-aggrandizing, gladiator-duel bombast of his debut, he redirects the tough trap beats of “FALLEN STAR” toward a dreamy meditation on the symbiotic relationship between success and self-doubt, while the Latin-flavored seduction of “FIESTA” is answered by the brokenhearted emo-rap ballad “GONE.” “I can never be controlled,” Boslen shouts on the aforementioned “LEVELS”—and Gonzo is a full-tilt, genre-mashing offensive directed at anyone who dares to try.
