Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda’s career could’ve practically been over before it started in 2014, when he was arrested and sentenced to seven years in prison at the tail end of his massive breakout year. (His underdog smash, “Hot N*gga,” and its iconic accompanying Vine clip need no introduction.) The sound of young New York street rap has changed pretty significantly since then, but Shmurda, now decidedly a grown man, stays true to his signature GS9 sound on Bodboy, his first project since his arrest—which is to say, rowdy, bass-heavy, and ready to rage (responsibly). Highlights include the villainous “Glock Inside” and the rough-edged “Bodmon.”
