Fridayy

Fridayy

The Philadelphia singer got his big break on the hook of DJ Khaled’s 2022 posse cut “GOD DID” alongside JAY-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and John Legend, which, besides being epic, is well-suited for an artist whose love for music began in the church band. A rookie among icons, Fridayy showed off a powerful vibrato that was the track’s heart and soul—a deep voice trained in gospel choirs, raised on Boyz II Men, and later inspired by the after-hours R&B of The Weeknd and PARTYNEXTDOOR. On his self-titled debut album (which follows last year’s Lost in Melody EP), he incorporates those influences into a style that’s timeless-sounding and distinctly his own—slick homages to OVO slow-burners (“3AM in NY”) coexist seamlessly with lush gospel harmonies and the sultry switch of Afrobeat (“Done for Me”). Fridayy’s lyrics are similarly slippery: Some songs are about God, others are about women, and some could really go either way. Holding it all together is Fridayy’s striking voice, and his unwavering faith in its resonance.
