UK house specialist Lee Mortimer (aka Friend Within) has been digging through his crates and traveling back a quarter of a century for this mix. “I’ve been looking back over the period of time when I first bought myself some second-hand Technics 1210s,” he tells Apple Music. “Yes, I still have them and they’re still going strong. That period was the late ’90s, when house music was fast and donks and hoovers ruled. All of these tunes are in my record collection, most of which is in my garage, slowly melting.” Compiling the mix has been an exercise in inspiration as well as nostalgia for Mortimer. “It’s all about the tracks that have been influencing me in the studio lately,” he says. “I love each of them for pure energy reasons. I love the heavy use of samples and raw beats, and the tracks are also fun. I’ve been hearing quite a few DJs drop tunes from this era in their sets, and it’s crazy how much they still go off. I’ve got a bulging folder of tracks I’ve made in this style which I’ll be unleashing this year, the first of which is out now on Toolroom called ‘Monkey Bars.’”
