These two violin concertos present an unusual but rewarding pair. Rachel Barton Pine, a player of considerable taste and imagination, brings something fresh to both works. She and her excellent partner Andrew Litton revisit Bruch’s warhorse and clearly enjoy everything that makes it so beloved—its soaring melodies, rich orchestration, and terrific sense of momentum. In the Elgar, Pine digs deep, drawing on the spirit of fantasy that has made her solo recordings so appealing, and gives us a thoughtful and considered performance.
