Coming up to Breathe

MercyMe maintain its winning streak by delivering a more-than-solid fourth album, Coming Up to Breathe. Lead singer Bart Millard and his group keep the emphasis on country-tinged rockers and ballads, with producer Brown Bannister brightening their pop edge in spots. The sense of wonder and reverence that filled their breakthrough hit “I Can Only Imagine” informs tracks like “Bring the Rain” and “I Would Die For You” on this album. Added to this familiar approach are some new shadings, such as the acoustic blues treatment given to “One Trick Pony” and the sleek Motown-style vocals heard on “No More No Less.” The theme of overcoming pride and selfishness is given renewed urgency on “So Long Self” and the title track, underscored by Mike Scheuchzer’s lead guitar thrusts. Whether praising the Creator in wide-screen numbers like “Last One Standing” or anxiously waiting for His voice (“3:42 AM (Writer’s Block)”), MercyMe never strays from a clear-cut Christian perspective. “Where I Belong” may offer the most affecting vocal performance on Millard’s part. Something of a transitional effort, Coming Up to Breathe suggests that MercyMe is searching for fresh channels for its faith-based artistry.
