Los Lobos are such a great band that even when you take their amplifiers away, they sound like they’re playing near 11. The six-minute version of “The Neighborhood” that opens the band's fourth live album shows Los Lobos' intensity in all situations. This particular gig was at New York City's tasteful City Winery on Dec. 23, 2012, with Los Lobos doing their acoustic thing. For the event, they settle on lesser-known tunes from their vast catalog—though they end the show with a rousing “La Bamba"/"Good Lovin’” medley that they could do in their sleep, but that they refuse to take it for granted. The music simply means too much to these East Los Angeles veterans. They’re putting on a show, and no one can be shortchanged. The rhythms are explosive in the acoustic atmosphere, bringing a different kind of jam band together for “Oh Yeah” and “Chuco’s Cumbia,” with percussionists Bugs Gonzalez and Camilo Quinones taking the spotlight. This is a rare band that's incapable of playing a false note.
