Chasing the Golden Hour, Pt. 3

Chasing the Golden Hour, Pt. 3

Even at its hardest, GRiZ’s music is all about good times, playfully mixing classic funk and hard-edged bass music into a hybrid that’s equally good for turning up or kicking back. In his Chasing the Golden Hour mixtape series, the Southfield, Michigan, artist puts his very sunniest instincts front and center. Following the ambient swirls and spoken-word invocation of the opening “Know Time Like the Present” (“The more you try, the less you be and the less you see/Let go and you become the universe”), the music settles into its laidback boom-bap cruising speed. GRiZ’s sunset tour takes in plenty of vistas: The woozy instrumental hip-hop of “Gettin High, Havin Fun” sounds like a funkier Avalanches or Air; “Won’t Be Gone Long” turns up the saturation on chillwave; “Solo” mixes up reggae with acid jazz. Throughout, the beats are sturdy, the horns punchy, and the samples as faded as a well-worn flannel.
