Boys Don't Cry II

Boys Don't Cry II

On the 2019 installment of Boys Don’t Cry, Febuary was generally emotionally unavailable; on the second, the Congolese South African R&B singer is brave enough to surrender to love and write from a perspective of vulnerability. On “Analisa,” he sings, “I can't do this myself, I'm sinking/Don't let me go/Higher up, we're both so close/You know I cannot lose you again.” Such musings on stolen moments, forbidden love, and the ups and downs of romance are accompanied by soothing contemporary R&B production punctuated by muffled vocal samples (“Working Weekends”), mellow piano keys (“Club Savanna,” “Keeping Secrets”), and subtle musicality, such as the dreamy saxophone solo on “Lemonade.”
