Bluegrass Vacation

Bluegrass Vacation

Fans of Americana singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Robbie Fulks have long known that he could make one hell of a bluegrass record; the Chicago-based artist possesses both the chops and reverence necessary for tackling the notoriously tough genre. Nearly 30 years after debuting with 1996’s Country Love Songs, Fulks finally has a bona fide bluegrass LP in Bluegrass Vacation, a collaborative album featuring a murderer’s row of pickers and players that includes Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Sierra Hull, and Tim O’Brien. While Fulks could have spun up an exciting collection of covers and traditionals, he instead offers his own original compositions, pairing his eccentric, highly narrative songwriting with complex arrangements and quick-fire picking. Highlights include opener “One Glass of Whiskey,” a down-home romp about drowning your sorrows in the City of Angels, and “Longhair Bluegrass,” a humorous tune that nods to Fulks’ younger days. O’Brien lends harmony and call-and-response vocals on “Nashville Blues,” which boasts a slightly jazzy guitar solo at its bridge. And Fulks closes the album with the quiet and sincere “Old Time Music Is Here to Stay,” an aptly titled track from one of the genre’s finer practitioners.
