In honor of Black Music Month 2021, house DJ/producer Honey Dijon has created a special mix. Below, she shares her thoughts on Black music and how its rich legacy comes alive in her work. “Black music is the vibration and communication of the universe. It's the way the soul communicates through sound. The world loves Black music and culture—just not Black people—and through all of the dehumanization, we have still created the highest levels of art from rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, hip-hop, disco, house, and techno. The blend of the two tracks from Derrick Carter's remix of 'Johnny Come Home' by the Fine Young Cannibals, with its jazz inflections within house music, into my latest single 'Downtown' featuring Nikki-O and Annette Bowen, which is heavily influenced by the gospel influence in disco, is the perfect example of the rich heritage and impact of Black music.”
