Aquanaute 2022

It didn’t take 20 years to establish singer-songwriter Ariane Moffatt’s debut album, 2002’s Aquanaute, as a French Canadian classic. Its sophisticated blend of pop and sleek electronics helped earn it 11 ADISQ award nominations and three Félix wins, including Album of the Year. Two decades later, Moffatt, now a certified icon in Quebec, revisits that album, with a personal selection of next-gen artists to reimagine its material. The result is a testament to both the enduring appeal of the songs and the depth of talent following in her footsteps. Electro-pop DJ/producer Robert Robert nails the languor of the original on “Hasard” while updating the tune with an effortless sense of groove. “Sur ton parallèle” gets two takes: Laroie, one half of hip-hop-R&B duo Heartstreets, imbues her rendition with sinuous soul, while Indigenous electronic artist Anachnid brings a clubby edge to the track. “Fracture du crâne” also gets a twofer as rapper Calamine delights with an inventive flow and Acadian indie hero P’tit Belliveau Auto-Tunes and filters the song into a slacker dance-floor anthem.
