Remission

Remission

Hailing from Atlanta, Mastodon is one of the best metal bands working today. Often lumped into the "stoner metal" scene with its ultra-heavy riffs and Cookie Monster–inspired vocals, Mastodon is actually much deeper than that, flexing a highly technical level of musicianship via complex arrangements, jazz-influenced drumming, and wildly unpredictable breakdowns. Originally released in 2002, Remission is the group's debut. It was critically acclaimed and remains a fan favorite in an impressive catalog that also includes Leviathon, Blood Mountain, and The Hunter. Unlike much of Mastodon's other work, this isn't a concept album per se, though it's said be based on a theme of fire, and drummer Brann Dailor said it helped him deal with the loss of his younger sister to a teenage suicide. Highlights include "March of the Fire Ants," "Trampled Under Hoof," and "Mother Puncher."
