My Lives

My Lives

Billy Joel has had a long, successful career by anyone's measure—but that's just half the story. Here, Joel gives his fans the alternate route. Songs from his days with The Lost Souls, The Hassles, and Attila are curiosities. B-sides, demos, and live versions of his solo work are more lasting. The Lost Souls' demos of "My Journey's End" and "Time and Time Again" are engaging. A heavily edited version of "Amplifier Fire (Part 1)" by Attila should make everyone glad Joel abandoned that project for Cold Spring Harbor. The demo of "Piano Man" is essential for every fan. "These Rhinestone Days," which became "I've Loved These Days," is thoughtful. The alternate version of "Only the Good Die Young" is revealing. The early live version of "Captain Jack" captures the young man on fire. "Elvis Presley Blvd." (the b-side of "Allentown") deserved to be on a proper album. Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and a live version of The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" prove that Joel loved the music most of all. A demo of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" is unexpected. The demo of "Josephine" is an iTunes exclusive.
