Emanating from the pipeline of talented Ghanaian rappers from Kumasi, CHICOGOD makes his debut with the Kwadaso District mixtape. In a tale of coming into one’s own, he delivers stirring hums, rapid-fire lyricism, and rap-sung melodies over thumping basslines. Though predominantly drill, the 12-track offering heads in various sonic directions, with the ambient “We Outside” and emo-tinged “Beauty and the Beast” meeting the acoustics of “Omo Se Den.” Between contributions by fellow Asakaa practitioners including Kawabanga, Jay Bahd, Kwaku DMC, and O’Kenneth, CHICOGOD exudes a gruffly relayed confidence while commenting on the solitude of the come-up (“Window”), the unrelenting grind (“10 Toes”), and the importance of trust (“Man Down”).
