Only Lovers Left Alive (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

As a film director with a strong minimalist vision, Jim Jarmusch also values soundtrack music that’s in sync with his visual strengths. His 2014 film Only Lovers Left Alive observes the immortal lives of vampires in love and their fascination with loud, feedback-embalmed rock ’n’ roll. This score features Jarmusch’s glorious trio SQURL and Dutch composer-lutist Jozef Van Wissem riffing through dark ambient pieces that value sparse orchestral touches, unnerving, disembodied vocals, and guitar distortion alongside an occasional underground rocker (“Please Feel Free to P*ss in the Garden”). “Spooky Action at a Distance” lives up to its title. Yasmine Hamden’s “Hal” casts its own spell.
