Beyond the Senses - EP

Niagara Falls’ Isabelle Rezazadeh made her way to EDM’s main stages on her own terms: teaching herself to produce, promoting her music on the internet, and eventually getting noticed by people like Skrillex and deadmau5, who signed her songs to their labels. Along the way, she forged a sound all her own—one that, like theirs, proudly folds in elements from across the musical spectrum. The first thing that distinguishes her music is its pace: Her style is often dubbed “midtempo,” though that term barely begins to capture the punishing effect of her slow-motion hammer-on-anvil beats. “Your Soul Will Never Be Released” stomps methodically forward like an army over scorched earth; “Stress” adds the pinging arpeggios of vintage John Carpenter horror soundtracks and terrifying whisper-growls straight out of heavy metal. The specter of metal looms large over the whole EP, in fact: The half-speed dubstep of “Kiss of Death” is strafed with cascading fills, conjuring shirtless drummers framed by pyrotechnics, and on “Falling,” anthemic screams from Tampa’s Underoath tip the song toward post-hardcore while Rezz’s synths and snares forge a mosh-friendly variant of rave music.
