Guit With It

Guit With It

The 1995 sequel to Junior Brown’s debut is every bit as good as its predecessor. Guit with It retains Brown’s superb taste in material, as well as his classy production method. You’d be hard-pressed to find another country album from the '90s with the natural warmth of Guit with It, which radiates humanity even when its leader is performing supernatural feats of skill. Brown’s guitar skills were quickly becoming legend—even outside of country music circles—and this album emphasizes instrumental dazzle more than his debut. “Sugarfoot Rag” and “Guit-Steel Blues” are just a few of the songs that will leave listeners asking “How does he do that?” At the same time, newcomers shouldn’t let Brown’s stunning guitar work overshadow his more subtle talents. “Names and Addresses” displays a heartfelt singing style sometimes overshadowed by his hyperactive dance tunes, and “So Close Yet So Far Away” is a moving duet between Brown and his faithful wife (and rhythm guitarist), Tanya Rae Brown. These performances motor and groove with a fine-cut precision that can only develop out of untold time spent on the club circuit.
