As much as Decemberunderground is preoccupied with themes of darkness, AFI refuses to wallow. Instead it embodies transcendence, whether in the tribal rhythms of “Prelude 12/21” or the soaring-yet-vulnerable performances of Havok, whose presence gives even the heaviest songs a pair of mile-long wings.
