Liars and Prayers

Liars and Prayers

Thalia Zedek never stays in one musical spot for too long. Whether leading Live Skull, Come or her own solo career, Zedek first centers on her own personal interpretation of the blues and branches out from there, adding the proper instrumentation at will. Her past few solo ventures, especially 2004’s Trust Not Those In Whom Without Some Touch of Madness, turned away from loud, abrasive textures towards a subtlety that brought her emotions closer to the surface with little more than cello and guitar to flesh out her visions. Zedek will never be a conventionally pretty singer, but she nevertheless finds the tight connection to the heart. Liars and Prayers is both politically and personally charged, and importantly expands her band to once again include a pianist who adds either a romantic wash or a gothic terror to Zedek’s strongest material to date. “Do You Remember” and “Body Memory” wrap themselves in a quiet dissonance that rumbles to powerful effect as the songs build slowly on the simple, mesmerizing melodies. “Wind” and “Circa The End” have the majesty of a Nick Cave ballad.
